PepsiCo, one of the largest Food and Beverage companies in the world, and Sunew, the global leader in the production of third generation solar energy technology, have teamed up for the development of a pioneering solar power project for distribution trucks. Sunew initiated the installation of Organic Photovoltaic Films (OPV) in 10 vehicles of the distribution of PepsiCo in a pilot project. The plan is to expand the clean energy solution to the company’s entire fleet of over 2,000 trucks in Brazil alone.
Solar energy generated by OPV is already a reality in architectural works and in pieces of urban furniture. The partnership with PepsiCo addresses one of Sunew’s main business sectors: the mobility market, employing clean energy in cars, buses, barges, vans and trucks, applications barely explored by the solar energy market. Being a lightweight, flexible, semitransparent, torsion-resistant, vibration-resistant film with high diffused light absorption capacity, OPV stands out as an innovative solution for increasing energy efficiency in combustion (conventional), hybrid and electric vehicles.
“Compared to other solar technologies, the OPV presents itself as the best solution when it comes to its resistance to the operational conditions of a vehicle. Traditional solar panels end up with cracks and damage that drastically reduce their lifespan under these operating conditions, because they are rigid solar technologies,” explains Felipe Reis, Sunew’s Product Manager.
Besides promoting energy efficiency in vehicles and optimizing the distribution operation, the goal of the partnership is to reduce the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG), since transportation is the sector responsible for the majority of emissions, especially in large urban centers. According to a report prepared by more than 40 international organizations that work in favor of sustainable and low carbon transportation, presented during the 24th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 24), the transportation sector contributes with a quarter of global emissions, and it is the segment responsible for the largest increase in terms of carbon emissions, since the year 2000.
“Rethinking mobility in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way has become increasingly necessary. PepsiCo’s pioneering investment in cleaner technology for its distribution fleet is a great example of innovation towards creating a more sustainable future in Brazil and the world,” says Tiago Alves, Sunew’s CEO.

This project in partnership with Sunew, combined with other initiatives such as the inclusion of NGV and electric vehicles, aims to contribute to mitigate our CO2 emissions in the environment, with a global target of 20% reduction by 2030,” says Eduardo Sacchi, Senior Supply Chain Director at PepsiCo Brazil.
The proposed solution consists of the installation of a solar power generation system composed of Sunew LIGHT™ films, positioned on the exterior top surface (ceiling) of the implement and a charge controller that will manage the recharge of the truck’s battery and the lighting system. The installation is intended to keep the battery charge at operational levels, providing power for the truck’s stand-by charging systems, internal implement lights and fiscal printer.
Sunew’s OPVs will ensure that the truck’s battery is always running and operational, increasing vehicle availability, whilst minimizing the risk of unscheduled stops and trucks fleet idleness, that, due to battery discharge, often becomes inoperative for products distribution. Furthermore, an extension of the battery life is expected, which reduces costs and minimizes environmental impacts associated with its disposal.
